After the initial 2 matchdays 4 teams have managed to win both games. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Man City as well as Barcelona. These teams are therefore all on top of their respective groups and look like strong contenders to reach at least the knockout stage. In addition, there have been a couple of surprises and shake-ups already. But there are 4 more matchdays to go and the beauty of football is also its unpredictability. In the last match against Galatasaray at Old Trafford Man United out in a fight but despite being in the lead twice, Galatasaray mounted comebacks on both occasions. Arsenal experienced their first loss of the season as Lens mounted a comeback in their first Champions League home game in two decades. The other group game ended in a draw with both PSV as well as Sevilla having a goal disallowed. Overall, everything is open in this UCL group ahead of the Matchday 3 fixtures.

A similar thrilling fixture happened in Berlin, Germany. Braga overcame a 2-goal deficit against Union Berlin to win with a dramatic late winner. The games on Matchday 3 might already show significance for the qualification to last-16 of the Champions League in this group.

Real Sociedad controlled the game against Salzburg, securing a comfortable 2-0 victory in their Group D encounter and hence leading the group ahead of Inter Milan. In the second half against Benfica, Inter asserted dominance, but Trubin’s saves and the woodwork prevented additional goals. Dumfries and Thuram secured Inter’s inaugural Group D victory, while Benfica’s struggles continue.

Atletico Madrid finally broke their seven-game Champions League winless streak with a 3-2 triumph over Feyenoord. Morata’s double, coupled with Griezmann’s goal, proved decisive in overcoming Feyenoord’s efforts. In the second game of Group E we saw a dramatic comeback victory from Lazio in Glasgow and hence their first Champions League win this season.

In a remarkable clash, Newcastle emerged victorious with a 4-1 win over PSG. Goals from Almiron, Burn, and Longstaff contributed to Newcastle’s success, while Hernandez scored one for PSG. Schar sealed then the victory with a late thunderous goal. The other game of this group finished goalless and therefore we see, possibly a bit surprisingly, Newcastle at the top of this Champions League Group ahead of Matchday 3.

The next instalment of the increasingly classic UEFA Champions League rivalry between RB Leipzig and Manchester City ended again with a City win. There was a lot of tension and drama in this fixture which can’t be said about the quite uneventful match between Red Star and Young Boys.

With 10 players, Barcelona secured a 1-0 win against Porto and is therefore clearly leading Group H. Torres netted the late winner after Porto dominated the first half. Despite VAR interventions and a late red card for Barcelona, Porto had opportunities but couldn’t find the equalizer. Shakhtar Donetsk staged a comeback by overturning a 2-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory against Antwerp. A dramatic encounter at the Bosuilstadion featured goals by Sikan while the late penalty miss by Alderweireld added to the intensity of the match.
