Following the conclusion of matchday four in the 2023-24 Champions League group stage, numerous clubs have secured their spots in the round of 16: Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Real Madrid, and Real Sociedad.

While these teams have qualified in most groups everything is still very open. Below we give you an overview of the results of Matchday 4 as well as current group standings ahead of the upcoming Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Group A

Matchday 4 results and current group standing:

With their win against Galatasaray Bayern Munich has secured their entry into the knockout stage as Group A winners. All other 3 teams have all still an equal chance to secure the second spot of this group. Nevertheless the matchday 5 game between Man United and Galatasaray can be critical for both teams, especially for Man United. If they fail to win on Matchday 5 they will be out of this season’s UCL competition.

Arsenal was in complete control in the game against Sevilla and are also in their group. The Gunners are leading the way in the Champions League Group B and only need 1 point in the Matchday 5 game against Lens to progress to the round of 16. PSV Eindhoven achieved their first victory in the Champions League group stage after an eight-year hiatus, triumphing 1–0 over Lens in a closely contested match. Therefore PSV remains a strong contender for the second spot after this victory against previously unbeaten Lens.

With their clear win against Braga Carlo Ancelotti’s men have sealed their spot in the last 16 and are comfortably leading Group G. With the draw against Napoli German team 1. FC Union Berlin ended a 12-game losing streak. Nevertheless, with only 2 more matches to play their chances in advancing to the last-16 are really not existent. On Matchday 5 Napoli needs to score at least a point in Madrid to stay in the race to advance to UCL knockout stage.

Even so there are 2 more matchdays to go both Real Sociedad as well as Inter Milan have already secured their places in the round of 16. After more than a decade away Real Sociedad really showed so far why they deserve to be part of the UCL. Many experts see them as the standout team of the group stage alongside Manchester City. While Salzburg and Benfica can’t reach the last-16 they will still want to leave their mark for the remainder of their campaign.

Celtic experienced a substantial 6–0 loss against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, with Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata both contributing two goals each. Therefore Madrid is overall on course to the knockout stage while Celtic’s Europe dream is over. Nevertheless the top 3 are very close together in this group. Hence today’s games could be path-breaking and we expect some good fight in the 2 Group E Matchday 5 games.

The so called group of death of this season’s UCL is a close encounter. All four teams are very close together and have a good chance to make it to the knockout stages. The upcoming games on matchday 5 are therefore definitely worth watching and will be full of drama and moreover great football.

Group G is very similar to group D as both top spots are already secured by Manchester City as well as RB Leipzig. Manchester City won all of their 4 group games so far and tops the table while RB Leipzig secured the second spot. Both teams will still show their very best.

Barcelona could have secured their qualification for the last-16 but Shakhtar showed a strong performance which keeps them in the race to advance as well. Overall aside from Antwerp all teams have still a good chance to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage and will surely do everything they can in their encounters on Matchday 5.
