The last group stage matchday in the UEFA Champions League is upon us, promising a spectacle of high stakes and intense drama. Over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, ten teams will compete for the remaining five spots in the round of 16. Among the teams desperate for a positive outcome this week are powerhouses such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. The latter, in particular, faces a precarious situation, with the looming possibility of elimination from both European competitions by the end of Tuesday.
Below we give you the full overview about the group standings ahead of matchday 6 and the fixtures for the final games of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Group A
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Galatasaray 3 – 3 Man United
- Bayern Munich 0 – 0 Copenhagen
Club | Points |
---|---|
Bayern | 13 |
Copenhagen | 5 |
Galatasaray | 5 |
Man United | 4 |
Bayern Munich has conformably secured the top spot in Group A and therefore a spot in the last 16. Aside from this everything is still possible on Matchday 6 in this EUFA Champions League group. Copenhagen and Galatasaray play each other and whichever team wins will then secure their ticket to the next stage. But a draw and in the same go a win by Man United at Old Trafford and Manchester could leapfrog both.
Group B
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Sevilla 2 – 3 PSV
- Arsenal 6- 0 Lens
Club | Points |
---|---|
Arsenal | 12 |
PSV Eindhoven | 8 |
Lens | 5 |
Sevilla | 2 |
Everything is very much settles in Group ahead of Arsenal’s trip to PSV. Both have qualified as group winners for the knockout stage. The clash between Lens and Sevilla is an interesting one as it will determine who will finish in third position and therefore play in the Europa League. Currently Lens has the better position as Seville needs to definitely win to achieve that.
Group C
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Real Madrid 4 – 2 Napoli
- Braga 1 – 1 Union Berlin
Club | Points |
---|---|
Real Madrid | 12 |
Napoli | 7 |
Braga | 4 |
Union Berlin | 2 |
Napoli had nearly booked their place in February’s round of 16 before Real Madrid then scored twice late on. This means the game Napoli vs Braga on Matchday 6 is definitely one to watch as both teams can still secure their space. While being at the end of the table Union berlin could still become third which would see them secure a spot in the Europa League knockout round playoffs. The chances are slim as they need to beat Los Blancos while Braga would need to lose to Napoli.
Group D
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Real Sociedad 0 – 0 RB Salzburg
- Benfica 3- 3 Inter
Club | Points |
---|---|
Real Sociedad | 11 |
Inter | 11 |
RB Salzburg | 4 |
PSV Benfica | 1 |
Both Real Sociedad as well as Inter Milan cruised through the group stage without a loss. Both teams are therefore already qualified for the last-16. But on 12 December they met at San Siro in a straight fight for the top spot of Group D.
Group E
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Lazio 2 – 0 Celtic
- Feyenoord 1 – 3 Atletico Madrid
Club | Points |
---|---|
Atletico Madrid | 11 |
Lazio | 10 |
Feyenoord | 6 |
Celtic | 1 |
While Celtic was last of the Group E table for all matchdays their Euro ambitions ended on Matchday 5. Two late goals by Ciro Immobile mean that Lazio follows Atletico Madrid to the knockout stages while both Feyenoord as well as Celtic are out of this year’s Champions League season. Feyenoord moves now into the Europa League group stage. Celtic needs to reflect on a quite frustrating Champions League campaign. The Scottish champion has been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage for the second successive season.
Group F
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- PSG 1 – 1 Newcastle
- Milan 1 – 3 Dortmund
Club | Points |
---|---|
Dortmund | 10 |
PSG | 7 |
Newcastle | 5 |
Milan | 5 |
The fight for the second place in Group F is on at the last, sixth matchday. With their 3-1 victory over Milan Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the knockout stages. Newcastle was leading for a long time against PSG but Kylian Mbappe’s late penalty meant a draw. The penalty in the eight minute of stopping time was very controversial and many feel like Newcastle was robbed of the win. Now Newcastle’s path to advancement depends on defeating AC Milan at St James’ Park, but their destiny is beyond their control. If PSG replicates their outcome in the match against Dortmund, the French team will progress. In the event of Newcastle triumphing over Milan and PSG drawing with Dortmund, both clubs will be tied on points, but Newcastle will advance based on the head-to-head record.
Group G
The results of Matchday 5 and hence the current Group G table are as follows:
- Man City 3 -2 RB Leipzig
- Young Boys 2 – 0 Red Star
Club | Points |
---|---|
Man City | 15 |
RB Leipzig | 9 |
Young Boys | 4 |
Red Star Belgrad | 1 |
Man City came back from two down to beat Leipzig once again. In this match Erling Haaland set a new Champions League goalscoring record. He is the players who has managed to score 40 goals in just 35 games and has beaten the previous record by 10 matches. Well done Erling! After Matchday 5 both teams have sealed their spot in the Champions League last 16 ahead of Matchday 6.
Group H
Matchday 5 results and current group standing:
- Barcelona 2 – 1 Porto
- Shakhtar Donetsk 1 – 0 Antwerp
Club | Points |
---|---|
Barcelona | 12 |
Porto | 9 |
Shakhtar Donetsk | 9 |
Antwerp | 0 |
Barcelona came from behind to reach the knockout stage with their 2-1 win against Porto. While Barcelona has secured their spot they need to avoid defeat against Antwerp to win Group H. This should be achievable as Antwerp is still point-less after five matchdays. But soccer wouldn’t be soccer if everything would be predictable. Nevertheless all eyes will be on Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk for Matchday 6. Both are 3 points behind Barcelona and are still in the race for the second place in Group H. Moreover they are playing against each other in the last match – and only one of the 2 teams will advance
