The sporting year of 2024 got off to a great start in January when Italian Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Moreover, Sabalenka won the Australian Open for the second consecutive year. Then, there was the disappointment of our Black Stars exiting the AFCON again after the group stage. But the tournament is still in full swing and we have seen exciting games, including the nail-biting penalty shootout after which DR Congo dismissed Egypt from the AFCON.

With the group stage games done 16 teams have manages to secure their spot in for the Knockout Stage. Unfortunately the Black Stars are no longer part of the tournament. The same applies to Algeria, Tunisia, Tanzania, Zambia, Gambia, Mozambique and lastly Guinea-Bissau. While these 8 teams conclude their campaign at group stage for the remaining 16 teams it’s now all or nothing in every match.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was entering its final group stage matches. With all teams having played twice, only two had secured spots in the knockout stages. Surprisingly, powerhouse teams like Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, Tunisia as well as Zambia found themselves outside the top two positions.
