AFCON 2023 Top Teams
The 2023 African Cup of Nations is going to be a very interesting tournament with many teams able to win. As always in the world of soccer nothing is predictable and we are surely going to see some surprises. Nevertheless when looking at the odds some teams are predicted to be likely to win. Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Algeria as well as host nation Ivory Coast are among the top teams predicted to win the African Cup of Nations in 2024. All of them have actually won before, some more often than others.
Egypt is currently the most successful team with an impressive 7 titles. In 2021 they were very close to their 8th title but lost the final to Senegal. Therefore they will aim for glory this time. The Pharaohs share a group with Ghana’s Black Stars who are equally eager to add another title to their current four. Or will Cameroon, currently with 5 titles, or the Nigerian Super Eagles, standing at 3 titles, lift the trophy?
Possible Winners
The below teams have the odds currently in their favour:
Nigeria: Three-time AFCON champions Nigeria emerge as strong contenders for the win. Their early qualification with a game to spare underscored their quality. The Super Eagles and their key players Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi and Moses will surely deliver an outstanding performance.
Egypt is always a favourite. The Pharaohs advanced to the final in two of the last three tournaments. Their closest bid ended in a penalty shootout loss to Senegal in 2021. Led by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah Alongside Zizo and Mostafa Mohamed they once again embark on their 8th title quest.
Algeria: after an impressive qualifying phase, the Algerian national team eyes victory in the 2023 AFCON. The two-time champions aim to replicate their 2019 success with star players including Riyad Mahrez, Said Benrahma, and Islam Slimani.
Ghana: undoubtedly also a favourite team to win, our Black Stars are set to target victory. Let’s hope that our key players Jordan Ayew, Andre Ayew, Thomas Partey as well as Inaki William can show their full potential to secure a fifth title.
Senegal: the Lions of Teranga finally won their first title in 2021 and are eager to replicate this success. With a great team including players like Sadio Mane and Ismaila Sarr it could be another triumphant tournament.
Ivory Coast: the host nation is a powerhouse in African football with two AFCON titles. With the support of the home crowd and players like Serge Aurier, Eric Bailly, Franck Kessie and Sébastien Haller they could win on home ground.
